Community health
Today, at least half of all people across the world are unable to access the medical treatment they need, and even in some communities where we work, access to healthcare may be limited or inadequate.
We know that having access to healthcare improves people’s lives. That’s why we run projects in some of the communities where we operate, to help address these challenges. We work with different international assistance organisations such as Mercy Corps to help communities recover from crises and provides families with life-changing skills. We contribute to various global partnerships supporting health system strengthening programs and the fight to stop the spread of diseases.
COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a serious impact on people’s health and livelihoods. Shell is working hard to assist in the global fight against the virus, and to support recovery efforts.
How we are contributing:

Healthcare in Nigeria
Together with other partners Shell, the Federal and State Ministries of Health in its effort to contain the current COVID-19 and Ebola Virus Disease.
In the Niger Delta, the Obio Cottage Hospital in Port Harcourt has become one of the most visited health facilities in the region. It was set up by Shell Petroleum Development Company in 2010 and offers a community health insurance scheme. To date more than 75,000 people have enrolled.
Shell is making direct interventions to enhance clinical capacities and capabilities across locations where it currently has operations in Nigeria.

Driving safely across India
As well as working to keep our own drivers safe, we also help communities to prevent road accidents and fatalities.
For example, in India, Shell and VisionSpring, a non-governmental organisation which aims to provide affordable glasses to people around the world, run a campaign called #DriveSafeIndia, enabling truck drivers to get their eyes tested while on the road. Eye-testing centres have been set up at truck stops, ports and other transport hubs where truck drivers congregate.

Helping the people of Hazira
In Hazira, a village in Western India, we work with the community to improve access to health care and clean drinking water.
To reduce water-related illnesses we installed a drinking water plant, providing affordable drinking water for almost 1500 households.
Shell has been supporting the Hazira Community Medical Centre for almost 20 years enabling access to primary health care at affordable prices. The centre is operated by the non-governmental organisation Kantha Vistar Satatyapurna Vikas Samity.

Fighting the pandemic
Since the outbreak of the pandemic in early 2020, Shell has been working hard to assist in the global fight against the virus, and to support recovery efforts. Our priority is supporting our colleagues, customers and communities where we work. As part of our response to COVID-19, we have donated more than 1.3 million pieces of personal protective equipment such as face masks, face shields, gloves and goggles to hospitals, front-line workers and vulnerable communities.
We also supported COVAX, a global programme working for equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. The programme is led by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the World Health Organization and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. Shell supports this global approach to vaccinations as it helps to protect people, health-care systems and economies, while prioritising those that need the vaccine most.
Tackling malaria
In the Philippines, we are continuing with our long-term private-public partnership in malaria control - Movement Against Malaria (MAM). MAM is one of the flagship public-private health programmes in the country, aimed at eradicating malaria in the Philippines by 2030. Thanks to contributions from various donors and the coordinated implementation with the Department of Health and local governments, as of 2020, there was an 87% reduction in the total number of malaria cases and a 98% reduction in deaths compared to 2003.

Investing in access to energy for communities
Providing more people with access to energy will require a mix of commercial investment and community programmes tailored to those who cannot access or afford energy solutions without support.
