ESG topics
-
Biodiversity
Our projects can affect local natural habitats and the communities that depend on them. Read about our approach to biodiversity, and see examples of our work around the world. Also learn about the strict standards we apply.
-
Nigeria
There is a significant amount of content available online relating to Shell’s operations in Nigeria. In particular, a series of briefing notes are published annually, with links below.
-
Biofuels
The number of cars on the road is expected to triple by 2050. The world will need all the sustainable transport fuel options available to help meet this growing demand, with fewer CO2 emissions. We believe that blending these fuels with sustainable biofuels offers the best, commercially viable way to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport fuels over the next 20 years. In 2011 we established the Raizen joint venture with Cosan.
-
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Helping to advance technologies that capture CO2 and store it safely underground.
-
External voluntary initiatives
In addition to our own Shell Business Principles, our reporting is guided by the major external voluntary codes and principles that Shell supports.
-
Human Rights
Shell is committed to respecting human rights as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Labour Organization core conventions. Our approach to implementing our responsibility is informed by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
-
Our performance data
Tracking our performance against a range of environmental and social indicators helps us to focus our efforts to improve into the future. We participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project and are included in the FTSE4Good Index.
-
Plastic waste
Plastics offer vital benefits to society. Shell has seen how unmanaged plastic waste has become a serious issue. We want to play an active role in finding lasting solutions.
-
Responding to climate change
We were one of the first energy companies to acknowledge the threat of climate change, to call for action by governments, our industry and energy users, and to take action ourselves
-
Water
Few natural resources are as essential for human development as fresh water – we drink it, wash in it, grow food with it, use it to manufacture goods and produce energy. We are reducing our use of fresh water by finding new ways to reuse and recycle waste water.
-
Working safely
We aim to have zero fatalities and to prevent accidents that put our people, neighbours and facilities at risk.
-
Dutch district legal case
On Wednesday May 26, 2021, the District Court in The Hague delivered its ruling in the climate change case filed against Shell plc (then Royal Dutch Shell plc) (“Shell”) by Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands), other NGOs and a group of private individuals.
Shell is carefully reviewing the court’s written judgment and its implications. At the same time, we are keen to share more information where we can. Here we address a number of frequently asked questions.
