Shell GTL Fuel and Diesel

Business benefits

Demand for mobility is growing, putting increasing pressure on transport businesses to reduce their environmental impact. With local emission regulations tightening, urban authorities and public transport operators are looking for immediate solutions to tackle air pollution in cities and urban areas.

Shell GTL (gas-to-liquids) Fuel is an alternative diesel fuel derived from natural gas, which burns more cleanly than conventional crude oil-based diesel. As a result, you can benefit from:

  • A reduction of your fleet’s local emissions, which can contribute to improved air quality in the areas you operate and help you comply with environmental regulations.
  • No additional investment: Shell GTL Fuel is a drop-in fuel that can be used in existing diesel engines without the need for modifications, new infrastructure or vehicle investment.
  • Ease of handling: Shell GTL Fuel has been classified as non-toxic, odourless, readily biodegradable and has a low hazard rating, being a paraffinic fuel.

Technical features

Shell is a pioneer of gas-to-liquids (GTL) technology, which manufactures hydrocarbon products from natural gas. This manufacturing process produces more consistent and uniform molecules, compared to conventional crude oil refining, hence Shell GTL Fuel:

  • Has been classified as non-toxic, odourless and has a low hazard rating. Shell GTL Fuel is not harmful if inhaled, fumes pose less risk of eye irritation, there is less risk of skin irritation and it does not cause significant organ damage through prolonged or repeated exposure.
  • Can help reduce emissions of regulated pollutants including nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and unburnt hydrocarbons (HC’s)1.
  • Is more biodegradable than conventional diesel.
  • Can reduce noise levels in some engines due to its more uniform combustion.
  • Provides better starting performance in cold conditions due to its higher cetane number.

The exact benefits vary depending on many factors, such as engine size, age, industry, etc. However, typical NOx and particulate emissions compared with conventional diesel are shown below.

GTL and KLM equipment services

What customers say

In line with the Dutch aviation sector’s ambition of emission-free ground operations by 2030, Shell GTL Fuel is now used in around 4,000 vehicles at Schiphol airport, Amsterdam.

"Every airline company wants its aircraft to be in the air as much as possible," says Gerwin te Hennepe of KLM Equipment Services (KES), responsible for the maintenance of most of the moving ground equipment at Schiphol. “The turnaround time, the period that a device stays on the ground, must be as short as possible. Ground transport plays a key role in this. Loading, unloading, cleaning, supplying and refueling is a sophisticated logistical operation with a scale that is hard to imagine for an outsider.*"

Synthetic technology for cleaner air¹

  • Reduced local emissions

Its cleaner-burning nature allows Shell GTL Fuel to have improved combustion properties over conventional crude oil-based diesel. This helps to reduce emissions of air pollutants and support meeting local environmental regulations.

  • Drop-in solution

Shell GTL Fuel can be used directly in conventional diesel engines without the need for modifications, new infrastructure, or vehicle investment.

  • Wide range of applications

Shell GTL Fuel is suitable for use in the transportation sector, for example city utility vehicles, public transport buses and inland marine vessels. It is equally suitable for construction machinery and power generation equipment.

  • Improved safety, handling and storage

Shell GTL Fuel is virtually free of unwanted components, such as sulphur, metals and aromatics, making it non-toxic and less harmful to the environment. It is also safer to handle and store, with no unpleasant smell.

  • Noise reduction

Shell GTL Fuel can hep reduce noise levels in some engines, enabling you to work at night or in restricted areas2

  • Vehicle reliability

Shell GTL Fuel has better starting performance in low temperatures due to its higher cetane number and is therefore a solution for all-season reliable operations.

  • Company image

Shell GTL Fuel can help with your efforts to reduce environmental impact and to care for your employees and the community.

Shell GTL Fuel burns more cleanly and so produces lower local emissions compared to conventional crude oil-derived diesel.

What our customers say

The biggest advantage of Shell GTL Fuel to us is that it burns visibly cleaner than the regular diesel we used before. In two of our modern engines, we have measured a soot reduction of up to 60% and in the older engines even up to 95%!*
